at Pumpkin Pond Farm

In August 2017 a talented group of chefs, filmmakers, farmers, dreamers, and conservationists came together to create a magical evening for Food + Film at Pumpkin Pond Farm on Nantucket Island.

The Film

Having stumbled upon a screening of Island Earth (2017) in April, Nantucket Watershed Project Director, Morgan Raith, sought to bring the film to Nantucket. This film challenges the status quo of conventional food production through the lens of GMO test field controversies on the islands of Hawaii. Since Nantucket is also an island on a mission to tackle food system sustainability, the film seemed like a perfect fit for the farm’s greenhouse turned movie theater venue. To learn more about Island Earth (2017), or to host a screening in your community, please visit the film's website.

The Location

We chose Pumpkin Pond Farm not only for its magical scenery but also for the owner's commitment to organic food production. Mary McGowan, together with his wife, Holly, and son, Charlie, work tirelessly to maintain the seemingly effortless beauty of the farm property. Where there is beauty, there is also productivity. On any given day you will find one of the island's local chefs roaming the garden beds for fresh produce.

The Food

Curated by the group 100 Mile Makers, chef, Leah Mojer, prepared a menu consisting of seasonal produce sourced from no further than 100 miles away from Nantucket. Not an easy task considering the first 30 miles are open ocean.
