Tim Lewis and his crew keep vessels ship-shape across the Boat Basin and mooring field. Lewis has a passion for, and he has been drawn to the water his whole life. To marry these two interests, he started a marine repair service in 1997. Marine repair is a downright dirty business, but Lewis works hard to minimize environmental impact on each job. “The vast majority of our clients are conscious of their impact on the water,” says Lewis, “they want to understand the issues to avoid further problems.” Having worked on the water for many years, both as a mechanic and a scallop fisherman, Lewis stresses that he has watched eelgrass populations dwindle. As Lewis travels from boat to boat, he has seen simple things like the overuse of chemical cleaning supplies in our harbor. Despite the many vessels that visit Nantucket each season, Lewis steps away from each repair knowing that a well-maintained boat is a clean boat.
